Phones Have Killed Off The Camera… What’s Next?

Have you ever tried to use your smartphone as a camera and been disappointed with the results? The picture was pixelated and out of focus or the shutter lag meant that by the time the photo actually took, the dog had run away. You’re not alone. Everyone knows that smartphones don’t take pictures as good as standalone cameras.

That was, of course, until the iPhone 5S. The last year has seen the inclusion of camera functionalities so advanced that more and more people are leaving the standalone camera at home or simply forgetting to use it.

Why can you be sure the standalone camera you currently have is the last one you’ll ever own?

  • Convenience
When it comes down to which items someone is going to ‘accidentally leave at home’, a smartphone is usually last on the list. Unlike traditional cameras, which can get lost at the bottom of a bag or left under a seat, phones are typically minded much more closely by their owners and brought with them everywhere in the back pocket or purse. This makes it the easiest thing to reach for when a moment strikes as something worth capturing.
  • Picture Quality
The convenience of mobile phone cameras has been around a long time though and people have still typically preferred to take photos with a traditional camera. Why? Picture quality. Smartphones just couldn’t cut it when it came to zoom, high quality and lighting functionalities. All that has changed.

Smartphone manufacturers have also worked on the shutter speed issue. Now, you can take photos in ‘bursts’ at 10 per second, ensuring that special moment is captured just right.

  • Access To Editing Functions
Photo editing applications like Instagram and Camera+ don’t come on desktop computers. Spending a long time waiting for your photos to upload to a computer then importing them into editing software is a thing of the past. It is much more convenient to edit the photo on the spot, swishing through filters and fixing red eye with a click of the thumb.
  • Instant Connection To Social Media
After taking the perfect photo and editing it into something worthy of an art gallery, the next thing anyone wants to do is upload it to Instagram or Facebook or share it with their friends. This is really where standalone cameras fail completely. The lag between taking the photo and getting it onto social media platforms is just too long for the average user. With a smartphone, sharing it across to your friends is just one click away.
  • Cloud Back up
Finally, with the advent of Cloud Backup, smartphones seal the deal on the traditional camera’s grave. If you’ve ever been traveling and lost your camera halfway through, you’ll know the agony of losing photos that you didn’t have time to back up. That’s no longer a problem when photos are taken with smartphones – cloud back up ensure that each and every photo is synced the instant it’s taken.

Smartphones have already crowded out a number of devices that we used to buy separately; alarm clocks, gps devices, fitness logs, notepads. Credit cards have already been targeted – could the trend go so far as to make even computers and laptops obsolete?
