What is a sub-domain?

A sub-domain is an extension of a domain name that helps to categorise content in a website, an example would be sport.news.com.au.

Sub domains can we used to group content in sites, in the example above to separate sport news from new content. They can also be used to separate parts of a business, i.e. finance.company.com.
